Start as soon as you start your job. Find out what kind of retirement plans the employer offers.

The three major elements of your retirement portfolio are benefits from pensions, savings and investments, and Social Security benefits.

Each year the Social Security Administration sends you your personal Social Security Statement, which gives you an estimate of the monthly benefit amounts you and your family may qualify for now and in the future.

Once you’ve reviewed your Statement, you may want to explore a variety of retirement scenarios using a range of assumptions about your future earnings or when you stop working.

What are some tips on planning for a good retirement?

Posted on Sep 22, 2009 under Retirement Planning | 8 Comments

Is it a good idea to retire fairly close to your children and grandchildren? Or head for that distant shore?

Is it a good time move back to a rural area and build a cabin in the woods? Or is that too isolated if health problems occur?

What worked out well for you? What was a mistake?
We’ve got the financial part planned, so much as the national economy has allowed.

To me and my husband - living within a reasonable distance to our children and grandchildren, is the most important part of retirement. It is all very well to have yourself comfortable financially, but what is that without love and support. I do not mean for them always be there to your beck and call, but to receive regular phone calls, regular visits, family gatherings, birthday celebrations - all are so important to the both of us. But - to each his own I suppose.

How to transfer the US-based 401k account balance to a 2a or 3a retirement planning account in Switzerland?

The company I worked for in the U.S. is closing down the 401k plan. I moved back to Switzerland and would like to transfer the funds from this US-based 401k account back to a retirement planning account (so called 2a or 3a) without incurring taxes. HOW DO I DO THIS?

You cannot. That 401(k) is pretax money and sooner or later you will have to pay U.S. income tax on it.

need help planning retirement and investments

The very first thing you have to do is figure out how much money you need. There are lots of complicated ways to do that (and they all amount to guesses) but you can get a good overview of what to do at this web site:

http://www.freethedrones.com/blog/2006/08/07/how-much-money-do-i-need-to-retire/

What you do depends on your age. If you’re young, then you can start small and build up over time - you’re in a much better position that way, because your money will work for you. If you’re older (50’s and up) you will have a harder job to do. If that’s the case, go here and get advice on a "last minute retirement" that you can do even at an older age:

http://www.freethedrones.com/blog/2006/09/02/how-to-do-a-last-minute-retirement/

It’s not ideal, but you’ve got to do what will work for you.
