When starting an on-line business do I need a ID or tax number to start or can I just start it up?

I use my social as my tax id and (to me anyway) it works just fine

I would suggest it. It is a very simple process too. You can call an IRS office near you and do it over the phone. Just go an IRS site and find office locator.

It depends on how you set up your business. If you are a sole proprietor, your social security number is all you need. Corporations or other types of businesses need a tax ID number.

If it is likely that you will be purchasing some inventory from wholesalers you will find that most, of good reputation and business practices, will require that you provide them with your tax ID number. They want to know that your company is a legitimate, registered entity so as to control and protect their own products and image. It’s really easy to get an ID number, at least in my state. Check with your state’s tax offices.
