Can a team retire the same number for two different players?

Posted on Jul 10, 2009 under Retire |

I was thinking about the Seattle Mariners, eventually they should retire two players that wore #51, Ichiro and Randy Johnson.
I think both the M’s will retire Randy Johnson number.

The Diamondbacks because he threw a perfect game and was the World Series MVP, and the M’s because he played for them longer than any other team.

I knew that different teams can retire the same player. Of course Jackie Robinson is retired by every team, but also Nolan Ryan was retired by the Angels, Astros and Rangers.

The Yankees and Expos have retired the same numbers belong to two different players so the answer is yes.

And of course the idiot above is passing of a bad guess as an answer which is really all that the baseball section and most of yahoo is, bad guesses.

PS - are the other idiots reading the answers? EXPOS AND YANKEES RETIRED THE SAME NUMBER FOR TWO PLAYERS.

Interesting point. Usually when the number is retired they don;t let anyone else use it, but these guys played in the same era so it is possible. He also has an outside chance of going in the Hall as a DBack with the No-No and World Series there. So is hat happens Ichiro will get it all his own.

There’s no rule against it. It’s the individual teams who decide what numbers to retire.

Jut recently, the Cubs retired #31 for both Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux. The Yankees retired #* for Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.

It’s been done before, and will probably happen again.

Two of the posts in this section have great answers. It is definitely possible, as sometimes a team does not decide to retire a number immediately after a player has retired, leaving ample time for another player to use that number and do well with it on their backs. It has happened many times before and could happen again.

Yes, a team can retire the same number for 2 players as it has been done by a couple teams. Examples include Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra (8, Yankees) and Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux (31, Cubs) They can do what they want since they make up their own retired number rules.

You didn’t ask it, but I think Randy Johnson will go in the Hall of Fame as a Diamondback because he had his best years there.

Yes, you’re allowed to retire two numbers. It will be interesting to see the Yankees retire Mariano Rivera’s number, because he’s 42 like Jackie Robinson.
