Why do Temporary Immigrants pay Social Security Tax when most can not retire in the states?
Posted on Oct 31, 2008 under Retire |I'm a Temporary Immigrant and I pay all my taxes. However, unlike my other work colleagues, I don't receive benefits like unemployment. Also, I can not retire here so is it right my employer takes so much in Social Security Tax? Are there any benefits?
If you earn enough paid-up quarters under Social Security you CAN collect US SS benefits when you do retire. There is no requirement that you be a US citizen to qualify for SS benefits, only that your status is legal when you earn the income and you pay in to the system legally.
The tax treaties in place with most countries do provide for credit under your country's equivalent retirement pension system. Contact them directly for instructions in getting credit at home for your income earned here in the US.
