If you're looking for something infomercial-style where you sign up for a website and "work from home" and make $250k a year, you're dreaming. The only way to make money from home is to put in a lot of sweat and start your own business based on a skill you have that you can sell to others.
My father's been working at his business from home for a couple years now and is doing quite well.

There are plenty of real work from home businesses online and off line.
One type is Direct Sales. Direct Sales Companies are like Avon,Pampered Chef, Stampin Up,Mary Kay and so on..
These are real companies where you are an independant distributor/Consultant/Representative. Most do cost a small amount to get started and many have monthly to quarterly quota's. You can make money but it is a hard route since it takes building a customer base, Cold Calling, Booking Parties and many follow ups.
Then there is MLM & Network Marketing.
You know products like Amway…
Stay away from these unless you are a great sales person. Companies like these depend on you building down lines.
As with Direct Sales but many direct sale reps. never get utilize this and still make a few extra bucks.
Then there is Affiliate Marketing..
You can make money from affiliate marketing. But you have to know what products you wish to promote. Basically you are relying on a lot of hard work and marketing to get others to buy the product or at least join a company.
All in all, I make a few bucks monthly with affilate marketing but not enough to call it a business.
Your best bet is to find somthing you really enjoy doing and spend time researching it. Then find a few great products and sell yourself.

Hi Essie..
Opportunities are popping up daily it seems.
Yet you want an established company with a track record of succcess over 5 years old.
One that pays you longterm in the "Service Industry" that does not require you to meet quotas or buy products.
Make it a Great 2008 !

Essie,
Like brunettementor said. There are "opportunities" popping up on a daily basis. The best way you can find the business that you seek is to create it. If you create your own small business online, it will help you to avoid the scams and allow you to have the legitimate business you seek. Do you need ideas? I may be able to assist. One great way is to build a website around your interests and learn how to generate an income by positioning your self in front of others already searching for what you have to offer. I hope this has helped.
BEST WISHES!
